Peace Felt Project - 2011
By Sierra Mohr
Birdsong Sundstrom, Debbie Gibbs, Mardi Nathons, Marj Person, and I met recently to make a wall hanging for the Peace Felt project. We had the "to-scale" mock-up Marj had made. Armed with that, and with roving in various colors, we set out on a wool adventure.
We placed roving - clean, combed wool - in alternating directions to form the base. Then we were ready to begin work on the design. It was almost overwhelming at times, but we persevered with faith and good intentions. Once we agreed on the design and placed the roving to create it, we rubbed and rubbed to create the "skin" on the front and back. From there we rolled the hanging up in the bubble wrap and rolled and rolled.
Holding our breath, we unrolled it to look at our work. It was well worth the effort. The wall hanging is stunning and we all agreed that it is going to be hard to give it away. We all got a little wet (especially Marg, thanks to me), got dry hands from the soap and water, and maybe a few stains on our clothes from some bleeding roving. But we had a fun afternoon, learned how much you can do when you work together, and created a beautiful piece of art the Guild will be proud to submit to the Peace Felt project.
Once the wall hanging is dry, I'll apply the peace doves and flowers the Guild members made at our May meeting. The wall hanging will be on display at the County Fair, with an explanation of what it is, the Guild's involvement in the project, and pictures of how we made it.
We should be learning our "partner" in the project any day, so we will know where the finished piece will go. 15 countries are now part of the effort - The Arab Emirates, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, The Czech Republic, Germany, France, Hungary, Ireland, The Netherlands, Portugal, The UK, The USA, and South Africa - with over 250 people participating as individuals and groups!
